A Living Tribute: Stage Greenery for Memorial Healthcare System’s White Coat Ceremony
Some ceremonies mark more than an achievement. They mark the beginning of a responsibility.
For Memorial Healthcare System’s White Coat Ceremony in Hollywood, Florida, Temporary Tropics was honored once again to provide the live foliage that framed the stage for this significant professional milestone. The ceremony recognizes physicians as they enter a new chapter of medical service—one defined by knowledge, compassion, judgment and the privilege of caring for others.
For this annual event, the stage design needed to feel polished and substantial without distracting from the people and meaning at its center. We selected a layered composition of white peace lilies, parlor palms and taller palms, using plant symbolism, scale and contrast to create a living foreground for the ceremony.
The result was quiet, dignified and intentional.
Why White Peace Lilies Were Chosen
The peace lily was the emotional center of the design.
Known botanically as Spathiphyllum, the peace lily is recognized for its dark green foliage and elegant white spathes. Its common name is often connected to the flower’s resemblance to a white flag, a universal gesture of peaceful intention. The plant has also become associated with peace, healing, hope, purity, sympathy and resilience.
Those sentiments felt especially appropriate for a White Coat Ceremony.
Medicine is not only the work of treating illness. At its best, it is the work of restoring calm where there is fear, offering hope where there is uncertainty and helping patients and families move toward healing. The white peace lily gave us a poetic way to reflect those ideals without introducing literal or overly themed décor.
Its white bloom also carried a visual relationship to the white coat itself. Both became symbols of care, integrity and the responsibility entrusted to the physicians being recognized.
From a design perspective, the peace lilies created moments of light within the deeper green composition. Their upright white flowers rose above broad leaves, allowing the stage greenery to feel ceremonial rather than simply decorative.
The Meaning Behind the Parlor Palms
The peace lilies were accented with parlor palms in both larger and smaller sizes.
The parlor palm, Chamaedorea elegans, is valued for its graceful arching fronds and adaptable nature. The species name elegans refers to elegance, while the plant itself has long been associated with refinement, vitality, prosperity and good fortune. Its ability to remain poised and verdant in indoor environments also gives it a natural connection to resilience and steady growth.
For a ceremony recognizing physicians at the beginning of an important professional chapter, those ideas felt fitting.
The palms represented forward movement and continued growth. Their fine, repeating fronds brought rhythm to the installation, while their varied heights helped the arrangement feel layered and alive. The smaller parlor palms softened the base of the stage, and the larger specimens created fullness behind them without obstructing the podium or sightlines.
Together, the peace lilies and parlor palms carried a subtle narrative: peace and healing at the center, surrounded by growth, vitality and promise.
Designing Stage Greenery With Purpose
Stage plants must be selected differently from general event décor.
The installation needs to appear full from a distance, photograph well from multiple angles and complement the scale of the stage without interfering with stairs, railings, microphones, presenters or production equipment. The plants must also remain low enough in key areas to preserve visibility for the audience.
For this stage, we created a broad botanical composition across the front using alternating plant sizes and leaf forms. Larger peace lilies established the central visual moments, while compact and full-size parlor palms filled the lower plane and extended the greenery laterally.
The variation in height was deliberate. A single row of identical plants can feel flat, particularly against the scale of a conference stage. By layering the foliage, we created depth, movement and a softer transition between the stage platform and the ballroom floor.
White planters kept the presentation clean and allowed the plants themselves to remain the focus. The containers related naturally to the white blooms and the meaning of the White Coat Ceremony, while providing contrast against the green foliage and blue stage drapery.
Framing the Stage Without Overwhelming It
Taller palms were placed toward the sides and rear portions of the stage to frame the presentation area.
These palms gave the design vertical balance and helped visually contain the podium within the wider room. Rather than forming a dense wall, they acted as botanical punctuation—drawing attention inward toward the speakers and ceremony participants.
This is an important distinction in conference stage design and corporate event plant rentals. Foliage should support the purpose of the stage, not compete with it.
The taller palms added presence at the perimeter, the peace lilies created meaning and contrast at the center, and the parlor palms connected the full composition into one continuous installation. Every species served a different function, but together they formed a coherent visual language.
A Signature Design, Refreshed Each Year

The overall design has become a recognizable part of the event: a refined layer of live greenery across the stage, white peace lilies placed with intention and palms used to frame the speakers and honorees.
However, repetition does not need to mean sameness.
Each year, we introduce a subtle modification through plant count, scale, positioning or layering. These small changes preserve the familiarity of the established look while giving the ceremony an air of freshness from one year to the next.
This approach is particularly valuable for annual conferences, award ceremonies, graduations and recurring corporate events. A signature design can create continuity and reinforce the identity of the program, while thoughtful adjustments prevent the environment from feeling static.

It was a restrained design, but not an impersonal one.
