One Installation, Many Lives: Our Ring-a-Drink Wall and Foliage Backdrop
The most successful event décor does more than occupy a space beautifully. It solves a problem, influences movement, encourages interaction, and continues providing value as the event evolves.
For the Excellence Lawyers Retreat, Temporary Tropics was tasked with transforming a transitional foyer into a purposeful part of the guest experience. The foyer sat between the registration hallway and the ballroom, making it an essential point in the natural movement of attendees. Rather than treating it as a space guests would simply pass through, we designed it as a destination.
The completed environment combined a grand entrance, a hedge-wall passage, a custom Ring-a-Drink activation, an 8-foot-wide by 8-foot-high foliage backdrop, branded details, layered lighting, and space for guest photography.
During a four-hour event, the installation operated as an interactive beverage experience. For the remainder of the three-day retreat, it became a branded foliage backdrop and content-capture destination for conference attendees.
One installation. Multiple functions. Every element designed with intention.
Designing for the Way Guests Move
Guest flow is one of the most important—and frequently overlooked—parts of event design.
The registration desk for the Excellence Lawyers Retreat was located in the hallway. From there, guests needed to travel through a foyer before entering the main ballroom. Without a visual cue or intentional destination, the foyer could easily have felt disconnected from the larger event.
Temporary Tropics approached the area as a progression rather than a passageway.
Guests first encountered a grand architectural entrance framed by tailored hedge walls. The greenery-lined approach created the feeling of a foliage tunnel, visually narrowing the route and naturally directing attention forward. The entrance provided a clear transition from registration into the retreat experience while building anticipation for what waited beyond it.
At the end of the passage, the Ring-a-Drink wall and custom foliage backdrop came into view. The installation created a compelling focal point that drew guests through the foyer, invited them to interact, and then allowed them to continue naturally into the ballroom.
Nothing needed to announce where attendees should go. The design itself provided direction.
What Is a Ring-a-Drink Wall?
A Ring-a-Drink wall is an interactive beverage activation that introduces a sense of ceremony and playfulness to cocktail or mocktail service.
Guests approach the wall, ring the bell, and receive a beverage through the circular service opening. The exchange is simple, unexpected, and naturally photogenic. It transforms the act of collecting a drink into a small performance—and gives guests a reason to pause, participate, and engage with the environment.
For the Excellence Lawyers Retreat, the activation featured two architectural white Ring-a-Drink panels. Each panel measured approximately 4 feet wide by 8 feet high and included dimensional molding, gold lettering, a decorative bell, integrated lighting, and a circular beverage-service opening.
The crisp white structures created an elegant contrast against the dense, richly layered foliage at the center of the installation. Warm amber lighting illuminated the panels from below, while saturated green lighting washed the surrounding foyer and reinforced the biophilic atmosphere.
The result felt immersive without becoming visually excessive: polished, interactive, and composed.
Cocktail on One Side, Mocktail on the Other
The two-panel format allows the Ring-a-Drink activation to support different beverage experiences simultaneously.
One side may be designated for cocktails while the other serves mocktails, giving guests a clear and inclusive choice. The panels may also be divided by beverage type, sponsor, featured product, event theme, or any other category that supports the client’s vision.
The headings are fully customizable. Instead of “Cocktails,” the panels may feature:
• Cocktails and Mocktails
• Shaken and Stirred
• With Spirits and Spirit-Free
• Signature Sips
• His and Hers
• Featured Brand Names
• Sponsor Messaging
• Event-Specific Nomenclature
The language can be playful, understated, branded, or entirely bespoke. The visual treatment may also be adapted to align with a company’s typography, event graphics, colors, and overall creative direction.
This flexibility makes the Ring-a-Drink wall equally appropriate for corporate retreats, conferences, brand activations, galas, weddings, holiday parties, product launches, and private celebrations.
A Custom 8-Foot Foliage Backdrop at the Center
Positioned between the two 4-foot-wide Ring-a-Drink panels was a custom foliage backdrop measuring approximately 8 feet wide by 8 feet high. Together, the center backdrop and two beverage walls created a substantial installation approximately 16 feet across.
The center wall was composed with layers of tropical greenery to create depth, movement, and tonal variation. Broad monstera leaves, palms, ferns, and trailing foliage established the foundation. Metallic gold botanical elements were then placed throughout the design, catching the warm uplighting and connecting visually to the gold bells, lettering, lanterns, and overhead fixtures.
Delicate floral accents in pink, white, blue, and warm coral softened the tropical composition and introduced a sense of celebration. The “Excellence Lawyers Retreat” name was placed prominently across the center, transforming the wall into a branded conference backdrop.
The design felt lush but controlled. Rather than presenting a flat field of greenery, the layered foliage created dimension and visual rhythm. Sculptural leaves moved outward from the center, metallic accents reflected the light, and small floral moments rewarded a closer look.
This is where biophilic event design becomes more than the placement of plants. Every botanical element contributes to the architecture, identity, and emotional atmosphere of the space.
From Beverage Service to Branded Photo Opportunity
The Ring-a-Drink service operated for approximately four hours, but the complete installation remained in place throughout the three-day Excellence Lawyers Retreat.
Once active beverage service concluded, the service portions of the drink walls could be discreetly screened with plants. This allowed the installation to transition from a beverage activation into a polished foliage backdrop and conference photo opportunity.
Attendees continued using the setting throughout the weekend to take photographs, capture social content, and commemorate their participation in the retreat. The central event branding remained visible, while the surrounding foliage and illuminated architectural panels gave every image a strong sense of place.
The installation did not appear unfinished when it was no longer serving drinks. It simply entered its next phase.
This adaptability allowed the client to receive greater utility from the same event-design footprint:
• An interactive beverage experience
• A guest-flow destination
• A branded corporate backdrop
• A conference photo opportunity
• A social-content setting
• A decorative foyer installation
• A visual transition into the ballroom
Instead of investing in separate structures for each purpose, the event benefited from a single multifaceted design that changed function as the retreat progressed.
Event Décor That Helps Manage Guest Flow
Beautiful event décor is most effective when it also understands human behavior.
The grand entrance and hedge walls visually framed the route from registration. The foliage passage encouraged guests to move forward. The illuminated activation rewarded that movement with an experience at the end. After interacting and capturing content, attendees could continue into the ballroom without confusion or unnecessary congestion.
The installation effectively created a sequence:
Registration became arrival.
The hedge-lined passage became transition.
The Ring-a-Drink wall became discovery.
The foliage backdrop became engagement.
The ballroom became the destination.
This type of spatial planning is especially valuable for conferences, corporate retreats, large galas, and multi-room events. Transitional spaces can become natural gathering points, but without intentional design, they can also create bottlenecks or leave guests uncertain about where to proceed.
By considering sightlines, focal points, guest behavior, service requirements, and the final destination, Temporary Tropics designs environments that guide people gracefully rather than relying solely on signage or staff direction.
A Backdrop Designed Around the Brand
The foliage design created for the Excellence Lawyers Retreat reflected the visual language of that particular event, but the concept can be completely customized.
The botanical palette may be adapted to incorporate a brand’s signature colors through florals, painted foliage, metallic finishes, lighting, signage, and dimensional logos. A design may feel deeply tropical, tailored and monochromatic, boldly editorial, or quiet and architectural.
Possible foliage treatments include:
• Natural green tropical foliage
• White-and-green botanical compositions
• Brand-colored floral accents
• Metallic gold or silver leaves
• Painted botanical elements
• Monochromatic foliage installations
• Seasonal greenery
• Holiday-inspired foliage
• Custom dimensional logos
• Neon or illuminated event signage
Although live foliage and biophilic design remain central to the Temporary Tropics aesthetic, a non-foliage backdrop may also be created. Custom scenic walls, printed graphics, branded architectural panels, dimensional structures, fabric treatments, or other materials can be used when a different creative direction better serves the event.
The goal is not to force every event into the same visual formula. It is to design an activation that feels native to the brand, the room, and the guest experience.
A Content-Capture Moment with Purpose
Photo opportunities are often treated as isolated decorative moments. They may be attractive, but they do not always contribute to the operational needs of an event.
For the Excellence Lawyers Retreat, content capture was built into a larger experiential system.
The backdrop was not placed in the foyer simply because the space was available. It was positioned there to pull guests forward from registration, animate an otherwise transitional area, support beverage service, and encourage attendees to continue toward the ballroom.
The location made the activation visible as guests approached, while the scale of the foliage wall and Ring-a-Drink panels gave it enough presence to anchor the foyer. Branded signage ensured that photographs captured at the installation remained connected to the retreat.
The performers, warm lanterns, sculptural furnishings, white platforms, and layered lighting further transformed the area into a complete scene rather than a freestanding backdrop.
Guests were not simply standing in front of décor. They were entering an environment.
Leveraging the Investment Through Multifunctional Design
Event budgets work harder when individual design elements can serve more than one purpose.
A backdrop may be beautiful, but a backdrop that also supports guest flow, beverage service, branding, entertainment, and content creation delivers a broader return on the investment.
For a multiday corporate event, this matters even more. The most useful installations are not limited to a single hour or program segment. They can evolve with the schedule.
A Ring-a-Drink activation might serve cocktails during an opening reception, become a branded photo opportunity during conference sessions, support a sponsor experience the following afternoon, and provide an elegant social backdrop for a closing celebration.
Plants can conceal inactive service areas. Signage can be changed. Lighting can shift with the program. Beverage labels can be updated. Furniture and performance elements can be added or removed.
The structure remains visually cohesive while its purpose changes.
This is the distinction between decorating an event and designing an event. Decoration considers how something looks. Intentional event design also considers what it does, how long it remains useful, and how guests will experience it at every stage.
