Designing Trade Show Booths That Feel Like Hospitality Spaces: How Live Foliage Elevated Equinox's Convention Lounge
The most successful trade show booths don't simply attract attention.
They invite people to stay.
At major conventions, exhibitors invest heavily in custom fabrication, lighting, LED displays, technology demonstrations, and hospitality lounges. Yet one of the most overlooked design elements is often the one that makes a booth feel the most welcoming: live greenery.
For this international convention at the Broward County Convention Center, London-based experiential agency Equinox partnered with Temporary Tropics to create a sophisticated hospitality lounge that balanced modern technology with natural design. The result was a space that encouraged conversation, networking, and longer visitor engagement while complementing the booth's contemporary architecture.
Working Seamlessly With International Event Teams
Planning an event from another country comes with unique challenges.
Time zones.
Venue regulations.
Shipping schedules.
Installation deadlines.
Vendor coordination.
Having worked as meeting and event planners ourselves before acquiring Temporary Tropics, we understand exactly what international agencies need from their local partners.
Our goal is simple: become an extension of our client's team.
For global agencies like Equinox, that means communicating during their business hours whenever possible, responding quickly to design revisions, understanding venue logistics, and executing flawlessly once installation begins.
Distance should never create uncertainty.
Matching the Venue While Enhancing the Experience
Every venue presents its own design challenges.
Convention centers feature soaring ceilings, expansive aisles, and large open spaces that can make even beautifully designed booths feel visually small if they're not balanced correctly.
For this installation, we selected Majesty Palms because of their height, rich interior-green foliage, and elegant canopy.
Their vertical form complemented the scale of the exhibit hall while softening the hard architectural lines of the booth.
Instead of fighting against the convention center's volume, the foliage worked with it.
Existing Planters, Elevated Design
One of the project's objectives was to maximize the booth's existing architectural features.
Rather than introducing unnecessary décor, we installed lush tropical plant material into the booth's integrated planter boxes while strategically placing matching potted palms throughout the lounge perimeter.
The result created continuity throughout the environment.
Guests experienced greenery from every angle without the booth feeling cluttered or over-designed.
Sometimes the smartest design solution is enhancing what's already there.
Creating Privacy Without Closing the Space
Trade show booths serve multiple purposes.
They need to attract visitors while also providing comfortable spaces for meaningful conversations.
The layered planting strategy helped define the hospitality lounge without building physical walls.
Dense tropical foliage naturally softened the seating areas, created visual separation from busy convention aisles, and gave visitors a greater sense of comfort while still maintaining an open, inviting atmosphere.
Plants become architecture.
Only softer.
Why Majesty Palms Were the Perfect Choice
Every plant species serves a different purpose.
For this project, Majesty Palms offered several advantages:
Excellent vertical height for convention halls with high ceilings
Rich, vibrant green foliage that photographs beautifully
Elegant tropical texture without overwhelming the space
A refined appearance appropriate for executive hospitality environments
Consistent form that complements contemporary exhibit design
When paired with clean white planters and integrated architectural planter boxes, the overall installation felt modern, sophisticated, and intentional.
Designing Through the Eyes of Meeting Planners
Before becoming owners of Temporary Tropics, we built our careers as meeting and event planners.
That perspective influences every recommendation we make.
We don't simply ask:
"What plants look good here?"
We ask:
How will attendees move through the booth?
Where will conversations naturally happen?
Which areas need visual definition?
How can we enhance the client experience without increasing unnecessary costs?
How can the foliage support the exhibitor's objectives?
Our recommendations are always rooted in both design and event strategy.
Bringing Hospitality Into the Exhibit Hall
Today's most successful exhibits feel less like booths and more like premium hospitality environments.
Live foliage helps create that transformation.
It introduces warmth into technology-driven spaces, softens modern materials, reduces visual fatigue, and encourages guests to slow down, relax, and engage.
Whether visitors spend five minutes or thirty minutes inside the space, their experience is elevated by thoughtful environmental design.
That is the power of biophilic design.
